We have spent a great deal of time researching trumpet mouthpiece designs, to come up with the most efficient mouthpiece for the recreational player.

Some of the brands we have tested are:

Bach, Yamaha, Schilke, Laskey, Curry, Reeves, Warburton, Giardinelli, Jet Tone, Stork, Zottola, Dennis Wick, JK. We have hundreds of these mouthpieces in either standard or modified condition.

The first conclusion we were able to make was that for our purposes, to give the maximum feedback to the player, the mouthpiece needed to have a comparatively large cup diameter, like a Bach 1 or Schilke 18.

Out of all the mouthpieces we were able to find in this size, we reduced the options to the Jet Tone #1s and 1M, and Giardinelli #3S and 3M. This was later pared down to Giardinelli 3M.

We then took the inside shape of the Giardinelli 3M and mated it to the outside shape of several other mouthpieces; later remachining the outside shape of standard Giardinelli 3Ms.

Then the issue of mouthpiece gap needed to be addressed. We took a set of identical mouthpieces, and modified the taper so that we were setting up different gaps between the end of the mouthpieces and the beginning of the leadpipe. We went from 0” through 0.062” 0.125” 0.187”, 0.250”. The best results were gained with the standard 0.125”.

The result:

We now have a Jaeger 3M mouthpiece that plays better than anything we have previously tested. They will sell for $175.
